SABYASACHI WOWS AGAIN

Sabyasachis' bridal collection for the season unveiled at the lakme fashion week 2008 was simply breathtaking. Tradition met with elegance and style expressing the spirit and feninity of the quintessential Indian woman.

The wine coloured velvet ramp, ornate chandeliers and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khans' voicw added to the magic.
Shararas, lehengas, floor length angarkhas, kurtas, kurtis, waist coats with shawl lapels, glittering dupattas and odhnis, shimmering flowing pajamas, saris in all their ethnic splendour –

the rich fabrics, stylishly ethnic prints sometimes embellished, sometimes mixed and matched with contrasting pattis in vibrant rich colors and prints so typical of the babu moshai spelt regality in every way.

Silhouettes for the kurtas revived the vintage glamour of the Mughal era as hemlines nearly kissed the floor or rose to knee level. The mix of churidars, ghagras, kurtas and waistcoats topped with a dupatta could look unconventional, but when put together so perfectly by Sabyasachi they created unusal combinations that were modern but unmistakably traditional.

The fabrics ranged from cotton, silk, chiffon, georgette, brocades to lush velvets which were blended together for different segments of each garment. Pants, printed and fluid were teamed with lean long kurtas or rustic Rajasthan blouses.

The finale creation - a black multi-paneled patterned silk lehenga with exquisite glittering embroidery worn with a glittering blouse and odhani was the showstopper as Sukhvinder Singh ended the show with his deeply rustic and rich voice.

sabyasachi mukherjee

Possibly the only indian designer to understand colors and combining the pallette with the right cut and putting them together without unnecessary fringes and embellishments, without catering to the whims of the market and yet at the same time being commercially successful as well.
Bridal wear was given a fresh lease of life with tradition marrying modernism. Rich
embroideries and boring zardozi being replaced with delicately textured tanchois and silks and even cotton tussars in vivid reds, bright fuschias, sunny yellows and rich purples woven together so intelligently that simple prints and plains together began to create the illusion of a heavily worked piece- and soon it became the signature style of sabyasachi.

For the first time one saw Rani mukherjee look dignified and dressed appropriately whenever she wore his creations- be it in films or off it.
His showing at the new york fashion week thi september saw Revolutionary symbols from Russia and Cuba on the clothes, multiple layering, indian fabrics in revolutionary colors of khaki, burnt orange and forest green. Though whether the message sent was one of evolutionor revolution by way of cultural is a bit confusing.
